Climate Action

" Everything is connected, and the web is holy.” -- Marcus Aurelius

October 24th was an international day of climate action. People all over the world gathered in their communities to visibly support the world's leadership in taking what steps are necessary to reverse the harmful rise of carbon in the atmosphere. If you want more information, go to 350.org

The Copenhagen Summit will be taking place December 11th.

This page is a place for people to share what they are planning in their meetings. If your meeting is doing something, post it here. Please post anything you are doing in connection with ecological issues.

When we think of oceans and mountains, forests and deserts, trees, plants and animals, the sun, the moon, the stars, and all the galaxies, as God's creation, waiting eagerly to be "brought into the same glorious freedom as the children of God" (Roman 8:21), we can only stand in awe of God's majesty and God's all- embracing plan of salvation. It is not just we, human beings, who wait for salvation in the midst of our suffering; all of creation groans and moans with us longing to reach its full freedom.

In this way we are indeed brothers and sisters not only of all other men and women in the world but also of all that surrounds us. Yes, we have to love the fields full of wheat, the snowcapped mountains, the roaring seas, the wild and tame animals, the huge redwoods, and the little daisies. Everything in creation belongs, with us, to the large family of God.  -- Henri Nouwen

The loans seem to be important for people, which are willing to start their own business. In fact, that's not really hard to get a short term loan.

All over the planet there will be vigils this weekend, called by http://350.org "Vigils for Survival" - of the planet as we know it. Friends have been involved in organizing these vigils, which will take place this Friday...
in Amherst, 4:30-5:30, on the Common;
in Greenfield, 5:00-6:15, on the Common;
in Northampton, 5:30-6:30, in front of First Churches.

This Friday, the 11th, Greenfield and Amherst will be sponsoring vigils on their respective town commons in support of strong action at the Copenhagen Conference now in session - the need is for reduction in CO2 to avoid climate catastrophe.

Today, though rainy, was a wonderful gathering in Greenfield MA for the Climate Action Carnival. Clowns, games, art projects, videos, letter-writing and lots of information sharing, music and good community. It was wonderful to be a part of an action in almost 200 countries and over 5,000 actions!!

Oh yes, and another feature of the Voluntown Peace Fair on Oct. 17 is the premier performance of the New Quaker Blues band! (Not to mention the Raging Grannies of Greater Westerly) Plus the Mystic Paper Beasts (BreadnPuppet offshoot).

Westerly Meeting is sponsoring a Friends of the Farm Fun(d)raising Fair for the Voluntown Peace Trust in Voluntown, CT, on October 17, 10 to 4 (voluntownpeacetrust.org)--a week early, but there will be a 350.org table, and we will have a pre-release screening of the new film "The Age of Stupid" which we were able to obtain from Greenpeace. You can click on the 350.org map and find us there!

The Peace and Social Concerns Committee of Mount Toby Meeting (Leverett MA) pulled people from Amherst together on the issue of "350" and created Amherst350, an organization involving Quakers, Unitarians, Episcopalians, students from the nearby five colleges, and others, so what we got started has now far transcended just our Meeting. This group has created a website, http://amherst350.org with lots of information about our plans for October 24th, with speakers, fun, and a Maple Tree Drama. On October 4th our "11:40 Hour" after Meeting will be focused on the issue of climate change, and what we are doing about it.

Sandra Boston from Upper Valley Worship Group is coordinating a day to participate in Bill McKibben's call for a Global mobilization for Climate Protection which he is calling "350 Day" (see www.350.0rg) .

We will have an organizing meeting on Wed. August 26th at 6:30 at the Traprock Peace Center at 23 Miles St. If enough folks show up to pull this together, we will have 2 months. The Greenfield High School is already reserved for 10-2 that day, a photo of the all attendees forming a big 350" on Beacon field (to be sent to Recorder and McKibben's website to join those from all over the world), a parade from there to the highschool, followed by contests, games, films, workshops, displays, and great celebration of our intention to help this planet return to the 350 parts per million of carbon in the atmosphere which life on planet earth likes (we are presently at 387 and headed for 800). The aim of the day is to send a message to our representatives to the Copenhagen conference in Dec where the next global climate treaty will be written.

Please consider joining this team and helping Greenfield lend strength to a global action to honor our planet and be good stewards of our precious resources the next generations are depending on us for. If you are a Greenfield area resident you can use the contact form to the left to let us know you're interested. Or perhaps start an event in your own Meeting/Town.
